As the State Tournament Series soon begins, I would like to wish you, your team, and your community the best of luck as that trip to Madison awaits many of you. It is the best time of the year, as everyone has aspirations for success for their athletes to reach the top of the podium. The memories that are shared and the journeys that many of those athletes went through to reach further than they thought are priceless. Take the time and enjoy the journey, as it only comes once in a lifetime.

Seasonal News and Notes:

  • State Tournament Schedule is out there on the WIAA website (www.wiaawi.org) and on our website (www.wwca.org). Make plans accordingly and early.
  • Division 2 and 3 State Competitors, including Sectional Champions, must weigh-in on Thursday evening.
  • State Individual Tournament has some new and improved looks. First, is the 3rd Place proposal that passed the WIAA this past summer. It will provide a more numerical value to the state place winners. An exciting opportunity for our athletes!
  • State Individual Tournament has a new weigh-in format. The Division 1 athletes will report to the North Coaches/Athletes section and the Division 2 and 3 will report to the South Coaches/Athletes section for weigh-ins and be called down by weight class from that section. All athletes will need to report to that section prior to the beginning of the weigh-ins. Announcements will be made prior to the weigh-ins to report to that section. Coaches are allowed to be on the floor or in the corridor of the Kohl Center. Everyone, please remain off of the mats.
  • Please utilize the bag check at the state individual tournament. They have more room this year for the athletes.
  • A request at the State Individual tournament: Only 1 or 2 coaches in the Bullpen area per athlete.
  • At the State Individual Tournament: The third pass for a coach/manager/videotape person does not provide admission to the tournament. It allows a person to be on the floor with the athlete during competition. Please, utilize the pass correctly. Remember, it is not a pass to sit in the coaches’ section.
  • The last item is the state finals. The WIAA has asked to help remind spectators to be classy at the event. The tournament is filled with wrestling enthusiasts and the event is about wrestling. Please help keep it that way. Last year, over two dozen people were removed from the facility during the event for the inappropriate items prior to and during the finals, throwing items from their seats, and a few random acts of carelessness. The booing during a finals match over security removing an item from the stands had an athlete ask his coach after he won his state title, “Why were they booing me?” It does make you think.
  • Trackwrestling.com has continued to grow in the state of Wisconsin. The AP of Wisconsin is now collaborating with them to help spread the great sport of wrestling more.
  • Remember to vote utilizing the website: www.wwca.org . The voting dates and times are posted there…All voting will be complete by the end of March.
